Gilbert Atkinson was born on the 21st of May 1893 in Kempsie, New South Wales. He was working as a School Teacher in Wooloowin, Queensland when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 1st of July 1915. Gilbert was allocated service number 994A and embarked from Brisbane with the 4th Reinforcements, 11th Light Horse Regiment (LHR) on the 17th of September 1915.
Gilbert served with “C” Troop, “A” Squadron and left Alexandria for Gallipoli on the 24th of August 1915. “A” Squadron was attached to the 2nd Light Horse Regiment at Gallipoli and Gilbert served at Gallipoli from the 13th of November 1915. He left the Peninsula on the 19th of December 1915.
Gilbert rejoined the 11th LHR on the 22nd of February 1916 and served throughout the majority of the Middle East Campaign with the Regiment. He was on strength for the Second Battle of Gaza and the Regiments support role during the Charge of Beersheba.
On the 18th of January 1919 he was attached to the YMCA and held the position of Secretary. He discharged in Egypt on the 30th of August 1919, at his own request. He died on the 4th of April 1978.
