Record of Service:
William Howarth was born about 1884 in Salford, Lancashire. He joined the British Army and was allocated service number 10540. William served with the 15th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers during WW1 and entered France on the 23rd of November 1915.
William was Killed in Action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st of July 1916, on which date the Battalion took part in the 32nd Division’s assault on Thiepval. William was one of the 470 casualties out of an attacking force of 624, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in France.
