Record of Service:
William Sumpter was born on the 19th of May 1908 in Ballarat, Victoria. He was working as a Farm Labourer when he enlisted in the 2nd A.I.F on the 6th of March 1941. He was allocated service number NX69170 and embarked from Sydney on the 27th of June 1941 for the Middle East.
William was taken on strength with the 2/4th Battalion on the 7th of September 1941. He returned to Australia with the Battalion on the 28th of March 1942. On the 14th of October 1944 he embarked with the Battalion from Cairns and landed at Aitape on the 2nd of November 1944.
William was evacuated back to Australia on the 4th of June 1945 suffering from dermatitis and tropical anhidrosis. He was promoted to Corporal on the 20th of June 1946 and T/Sergeant on the 3rd of May 1948. He discharged on the 30th of June 1948 and joined the Regular Army Special Reserve (service number NP84179).
