Record of Service:
William Steele was born on the 20th of August 1898 in Gympie, Queensland. He was working as a Labourer when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 2nd of December 1915. He was allocated service number 2238 and embarked from Sydney on the 11th of March 1916 with the 15th Reinforcements, 5th Light Horse Regiment.
William joined the 2nd Light Horse Training Regiment on the 14th of April 1916 and on the 15th of July 1916 was taken on strength with the 12th Company, Imperial Camel Corps. On the 30th of September 1916 he was charged for disobedience of orders, smoking and lying down on “stand to arms.”
On the 11th of November 1916 William was taken on strength with the 3rd ANZAC Battalion, I.C. Bde, E.E.F. He was on strength with the Camel Corps at the time of the Battles of Rafa, 2nd Gaza and Beersheba. On the 28th of July 1918 William transferred to the 5th Light Horse Regiment and returned to Australia on the 27th of June 1919. He was discharged from the 1 M.D on the 27th of September 1919.
Sadly William died on the 25th of February 1930, an article in the Brisbane Courier states that he died from a rifle wound to the centre of his forehead.
