Record of Service:
Herbert Hammerton was born on the 26th of July 1892 in Twickenham, Middlesex, England. In the 1911 England Census he is listed as a Private with the Queens Regiment residing at Stoughton Barracks, Guilford.
At the outbreak of WW1 Herbert was serving with the 2nd Battalion, Royal West Surrey Regiment, stationed in South Africa. The Battalion returned to the U.K in September 1914 and embarked for Zeebrugge in Belgium on the 4th of October 1914.
Herbert was Wounded in Action on the 3rd of June 1915. In 1918 he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field, London Gazette. 16th of July 1918 page 8310. Herbert survived the war and continued to serve with the Queens Regiment post war. He was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1929.
