    Thomas Johnstone was born about 1889 in Wigan, Lancaster, England. He emigrated to Brisbane, Australia on the 22nd od August 1910. He was working as a Battery Hand in Queensland when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 21st of August 1914. Thomas was allocated service number 724 and was an original member of “F” Company, 9th Battalion.

     

    Thomas proceeded to join the M.E.F on the 2nd of March 1915 and landed in the first wave at Gallipoli on the 25th of April 1915. He was Wounded in Action (GSW back and side) at the landing on the 25th of April 1915. On the 27th of July 1915 he rejoined the Battalion at Gallipoli.

     

    On the 13th of March 1916 Thomas transferred to the 3rd Machine Gun Company and proceeded to join the B.E.F in France on the 29th of March 1916. He was Wounded in Action (2nd occ. GSW abdomen) at Pozieres on the 24th of July 1916. An eye witness states, “….at Pozieres I was in action, a shell came over about noon and Johnstone was hit in the stomach…” Three days later, Thomas died from his wounds and now rests in the Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery, France.

     

    Notes:

     

    Please note there are several Thomas Johnstone’s listed on the CWGC site, however this is a unique name to Australian Forces. (Plaque was purchased from an estate in Brisbane).
