    William Greber was born on the 27th of December 1881 in Singleton, New South Wales. He was working as a farmer in Tuckurimba when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 9th of March 1916. He was allocated service number 2177 and embarked from Brisbane on the 16th of August 1916 with the 4th Reinforcements, 49th Battalion.

     

    William disembarked at Plymouth on the 13th of October 1916 and proceeded overseas to France on the 12th of December 1916. On the 16th of February 1917 he was taken on strength with the 49th Battalion. William was on strength with the Battalion for the attack on Noreuil and the battles of Messines and Polygon Wood.

     

    William was Wounded in Action (shell wound right leg and arms) around Ypres on the 19th of October 1917. Sadly, he succumbed to his wounds and died on the 16th of November 1917. He now rests in the Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

     

    William’s brother 4734 Arthur Greber and three of his cousins, 1913 Albert Greber KIA, 2890 Alfred Greber KIA and 4877 Ernest Greber MM also served during WW1.
