Record of Service:
William Hughes was born on the 11th of March 1891 in Gilmore, New South Wales. He was employed as a Civil Servant when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 23rd of May 1917. He was allocated service number 15270 and embarked from Sydney with the 31st Reinforcements, ASC on the 31st of October 1917.
William disembarked at Devonport on the 25th of November 1917 and on the 14th of February 1918 was attached to Headquarters U.K depot. On the 19th of June 1918 he marched out to the AASC training depot and on the 24th of June 1918 proceeded overseas to France.
On the 15th of August 1918 he was taken on strength with the 25th Company, 3rd Div. Train. On the 14th of December 1918 he transferred to the Australian Army Pay Corps and on the 1st of June 1919 was promoted to ER Corporal. He returned to Australia on the 8th of October 1919 and was discharged on the 31st of December 1919.
Post war he returned to the Public Service and was the Chief Inspector of Stores and Transport – P.M.G Department. He was awarded the 1935 Jubilee Medal as a Senior Clerk with the PMG and the 1953 Coronation Medal as a Public Servant. He died on the 16th of March 1982.
