Andrew Abercrombie was born on the 17th of June 1878 in Mount Duneed, Victoria. He was working as a School Teacher in Melbourne when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 17th of July 1915. He was allocated service number 2252 and embarked from Melbourne on the 2nd of May 1916 with the 16th Reinforcements, 8th Light Horse Regiment.
On the 8th of June 1916 he was taken on strength with the 3rd LHTR. On the 12th of July 1916 he was promoted to T/Sergeant and joined the Instructional Staff at Zeitoun. On the 7th of August 1916 he was promoted to T/ Staff Sergeant at the School of Gunnery at Moascar. On the 28th of February 1917, with the rank of Sergeant, he transferred to the 4th L.H Brigade, Machine Gun Squadron.
Andrew’s section was attached to the 12th LHR and on the 19th of April 1917 took part in the second battle of Gaza. With his section he was again attached to the 12th LHR, and on the 31st of October 1917 took part in the final charge of Beersheba. After Beersheba, his Squadron, attached to the 4th Brigade, followed the retreating Turks to the Jaffa-Jerusalem Line. Andrew was connected with the second battle of Es Salt and remained with his Squadron until November 1918 when he joined the Officers Cadet Battalion at Zeitoun.
On the 4th of January 1919 Andrew was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and posted to the 4th Machine Gun Squadron. In March 1919 he was attached to the 4th LHR and for the next three months was involved in the Egyptian Rebellion. On the 21st of June 1919 he was promoted to Lieutenant.
Andrew returned to Australia in August 1919 and his appointment was terminated on the 9th of October 1919. He died on the 21st of April 1970.
