Record of Service:
William McLeod was born on the 19th of September 1917 in Bondi, New South Wales. He was working as a Lubrication Engineer when he enlisted in the 2nd A.I.F on the 22nd of May 1940. William was allocated service number NX16564 and on the 27th of May 1940 was attached to HQ, 20th Infantry Brigade.
William embarked from Sydney on the 19th of October 1940 and disembarked at Kantara in the Middle East on the 16th of November 1940. William was involved in Intelligence Duties with Head Quarters, 20th Infantry Brigade in the Middle East throughout the Tobruk and El Alamein campaigns. On the 14th of January 1943 he transferred to the 2/13th Battalion and embarked from the Middle East on the 26th of January 1943.
Following leave, getting married and being promoted to Lance Corporal, William embarked from Cairns on the 26th of July 1943 with the 2/13th Battalion. He disembarked at Milne Bay on the 30th of July 1943 and was evacuated to hospital on the 8th of November 1943. He was promoted to Corporal on the 8th of February 1944. Still suffering from his illness, he embarked from Finschhafen on the 28th of February 1944 and arrived in Brisbane on the 7th of March 1944.
After recovering from his illness, William rejoined his unit on the 3rd of September 1944. He then transferred to the 3rd Australian Recruit Training Battalion at Canungra, Queensland. He discharged from the army on the 12th of September 1945.
