    Arthur Griffiths was born in 1912 in Sydney, New South Wales. He was part of the Australian Merchant Navy during WW2. He was a Greaser aboard SS Ceramic when she was torpedoed by German U-boat U515 on the 6th of December 1942.

     

    The Ceramic was hit by three torpedoes and managed to stay afloat for around three hours before she finally sunk on the 7th of December 1942. Arthur was amongst 656 soles that lost their lives as a result of this action. Aboard were 155 women and children including 50 nurses. Arthur is officially reported as Killed in Action at sea, in the North Atlantic Ocean on the 7th of December 1942.

     

    Arthur is honoured on the Tower Hill Memorial, London, England and the Australian Commemorative Roll, Australian War Memorial.
