Byron Hobson was born about 1889 in Melbourne, Victoria. He was working as a Clerk when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 14th of September 1914. He was allocated service number 613 and was an original member of “F” Company, 13th Battalion. He embarked from Melbourne with the 13th Battalion on the 22nd of December 1914.
Byron proceeded to join the M.E.F on the 12th of April 1915 and would have landed on the Gallipoli Peninsular with the Battalion, late afternoon, on the 25th of April 1915. On the 1st of May 1915 he was Wounded in Action, however remained with the Battalion.
Byron was promoted to Sergeant and CQMS on the 14th of May 1915. On the 26th of August 1915 he was admitted to hospital suffering from Neurasthenia. He returned to the 13th Battalion on the 15th of January 1916. He proceeded to join the B.E.F on the 1st of June 1916 and promoted to RQMS on the 7th of June 1917. On the 15th of November 1917 he was admitted to hospital (suffering from P.U.O). Byron returned to the 13th Battalion on the 18th of August 1918 and returned to Australia on the 8th of October 1918.
Byron was recommended and awarded the Meritorious Service Medal London Gazette 31132, 18th of January 1919.
His citation: “Recommended for consistent good work and devotion to duty during period February to September 1918. He has served continually since 1914 and has at all times been a model of industry and soldierly bearing.”
Byron died on the 13th of February 1933.
