    Phillip White was born about 1887 in Richmond, Victoria. He was working as an Electrician when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 24th of November 1915. He was allocated service number 1912 and embarked from Melbourne on the 4th of May 1916 with the 3rd Reinforcements, 60th Battalion.

     

    Phillip proceeded overseas to France on the 11th of November 1916 and was taken on strength with the 60th Battalion on the 29th of December 1916. He was Wounded in Action on the 12th of May 1917 (bruised leg and back) during the 2nd Battle of Bullecourt. He returned to the battalion on the 18th of May 1917.

     

    On the 7th of December 1917 Phillip went to the U.K on leave and following several charges of AWL and time in hospital suffering from VD he returned to the 60th Battalion on the 3rd of May 1918. On the 25th of July 1918 he was court martialled – the charge, “when on active service deserting his majesty’s service, in that whilst his company was doing duty in the front line (Canberra Trench) absented himself without leave.” Phillip was found guilty and sentenced to 2 years Imperial Hard Labour.

     

    On the 29th of August 1918 Phillip’s sentence was suspended and he returned to the 60th Battalion on the 9th of September 1918. On the 25th of September 1918 he transferred to the 59th Battalion. He returned to Australia on the 31st of March 1919 and was discharged on the 6th of July 1919.
