Nicholas Matthews was born on the 25th of September 1899 in Glenferrie, Victoria. He was working as a Salesman and living at 10 St. Columb St, Glenferrie, Victoria when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 26th of July 1918. At the time of his enlistment Nicholas had served for five years with the Senior Cadets, attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.
He was allocated service number 69063 and embarked from Sydney with the 16th General Reinforcements on the 7th of November 1918.
By the time Nicholas reached the U.K the war had ended. He returned to Australia on the 30th of January 1920. He married Louisa Lillian Kerr in Victoria in 1925.
Nicholas served in WW2 with the 13th Battalion, Volunteer Defence Corps. He enlisted on the 17th of March 1942 and was allocated service number V364776. On the 5th of May 1942 Nicholas commenced full time duty and was promoted to Staff Sergeant. He discharged on the 14th of January 1944.
