Charles Read was born about 1896 in Liverpool, England. He enlisted in the A.I.F on the 26th of April 1916 and was allocated service number 190. He embarked from Sydney on the 18th of May 1916 with the 3rd Division Cyclist Company.
During the voyage to England Charles was charged at sea for breaking out of quarters at Cape Town and escaping arrest, he was awarded 21 days detention. On the 29th of July 1916 he was T.O.S with the Australian Cyclist Training Battalion. On the 23rd of September he proceeded overseas to France and on the 5th of October 1916 he transferred to the 7th Battalion.
Throughout 1917 Charles was charged for AWL on numerous occasions eventually resulting in 6 months Imperial Hard Labour. On the 11th of September 1917 he was sent to Military Prison where he stayed until the 16th of January 1918, when the remainder of his sentence was remitted. He returned to the 7th Battalion on the 2nd of February 1918. Charles returned to Australia on the 12th of June 1919 and discharged from the 3rd M.D.
