Ernest Stone was born on the 14th of October 1889 in Bournemouth, Hants, England. He was working as a Motor Driver in Warragul, Victoria when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 1st of March 1915. He was allocated service number 1776 and embarked from Melbourne on the 16th of July 1915 with the 2nd Reinforcements, 21st Battalion.
Ernest’s stay abroad was short lived and he was returned to Australia on the 17th of October 1915 (having contracted VD). On the 22nd of November 1915 he re-attested and was allocated service number 3878. He embarked from Melbourne on the 23rd of November 1915 with the 12th Reinforcements, 5th Battalion.
On the 29th of March 1916 Ernest proceeded overseas to France and was taken on strength with the 5th Battalion on the 17th of May 1916. He was Wounded in Action (shell shock/gassed) on the 25th of July 1916, 2nd occasion (shell wound leg) 20th of September 1917 and 3rd occasion (condition not recorded) 26th of April 1918.
Ernest survived the war and returned to Australia on the 12th of May 1919and discharged on the 8th of September 1919. He died on the 7th of June 1962.
