    Record of Service:

    Dennis Hartley was born on the 11th of May 1892 in Wakefield, England. He was working as a Coal Miner when he decided to travel to Australia in 1912. Dennis boarded the ship; “Irishman” on the 15th of March 1912 that departed from Liverpool, England bound for Melbourne, Australia.

     

    On the 15th of September 1914, Dennis enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy for an engagement of five years. He was allocated Official Number 4110 and served as a Stoker aboard HMAS Australia for the duration of World War One. By the end of the war, Dennis had advanced to Leading Stoker and on the 19th of September 1919 his engagement expired.

     

    Dennis left the R.A.N and returned to the U.K , where on the 1st of January 1921 he married Lily Hartley at West Parade Chapel, West Parade, Wakefield. Two years after their marriage, on the 30th of January 1923, Dennis, Lily and their new born son William boarded the ship, “Jervis Bay” in London bound for Australia.

     

    Dennis died in Hawthorn, Victoria, in 1979 aged 87 years.

     

    Dennis was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War & Victory medals for his service during WW1; unfortunately the British War Medal is missing.
