John Kinnear was born about 1890 in Armagh, Ireland. He was working as a Labourer in Swan Hill, Victoria when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 2nd of January 1915. He was allocated service number 1673 and embarked from Melbourne on the 19th of February 1915 with the 3rd Reinforcements, 7th Battalion.
John joined the Battalion at Gallipoli on the 5th of May 1915 and was on strength with the Battalion for the failed attack on Krithia in May 1915. He survived Krithia and was with the Battalion for the Battle of Lone Pine between the 6th and 8th of August 1915. Surviving Lone Pine, John was sent to hospital on the 13th of August 1915 suffering from Enteric Fever.
John embarked for the U.K on the 15th of September 1915 and moved between hospitals and Convalescent Depots (suffering from VD and feet trouble) until the 23rd of March 1917, when he transferred to the 65th Battalion. He returned to Australia on the 26th of September 1917 and was discharged M.U from the 3 M.D on the 18th of January 1918.
