    Clarence Osborne was born on the 3rd of March 1894 in Port Melbourne, Victoria. He was the only son of Lieutenant Colonel William Henry Osborne who had served with the 3rd Ballarat Bn, Victorian Rifles and was Commanding Officer of the Submarine Mining Company.

     

    Clarence enlisted in the A.I.F on the 31st of August 1915 and was allocated service number 2951. He embarked from Melbourne on the 24th of November 1915 with the 5th Field Company Engineers. He rose quickly through the ranks being promoted to Corporal on the 14th of March 1916, Sergeant on the 24th of October 1916 and C.S.M on the 4th of February 1917.

     

    On the 14th of June 1916 Clarence was recommended for the Military Medal, “For devotion to duty at all times and under all circumstances, sometimes under shell fire. Very efficient handling of working parties.” However, he never received this award.

     

    On the 7th of March 1917 Clarence transferred to the 1st Pioneer Battalion and on the 21st of April 1917 was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. On the 30th of July he was promoted to Lieutenant. He continued to serve with the 1st Pioneers for the remainder of the war and returned to Australia on the 15th of November 1919.

     

    Sadly, he died on the 4th of August 1924, his death attributed to deferred shell shock.
