William Cumberland was born on the 23rd of September 1889 in Nundah, Queensland. He was working as a Chemist’s Printer when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 22nd of June 1915. He was allocated service number 1671 and embarked from Brisbane on the 16th of August 1915 with the 3rd Reinforcements, 4th Light Horse Field Ambulance.
On the 7th of March 1916 William transferred to the 3rd Field Ambulance and on the 27th of March 1916 proceeded to join the B.E.F. On the 28th of July 1916 he was attached to no. 44 Casualty Clearing Station and returned to his unit on the 6th of August 1916. On the 18th of January 1917 he was admitted to hospital (V.D). On the 23rd of June 1917 he was taken on strength with the 17th Field Ambulance.
On the 17th of November 1917 William proceeded overseas to France and on the 25th of November 1917 rejoined the 3rd Field Ambulance. On the 11th of August 1918 he was Wounded in Action (Gassed). On this day a gas shrapnel shell exploded amongst two squads of bearers, killing one man and gassing or wounding another five men. He was invalided to the U.K on the 17th of August 1918 and returned to Australia on the 2nd of January 1919. He discharged from 1 M.D on the 13th of September 1919. He died in Brisbane on the 15th of February 1928.
