Herbert Hine was born on the 7th of February 1894 in New Plymouth, New Zealand. He was working as a Farm Hand when he enlisted in the NZEF on the 11th of October 1915. Herbert was allocated service number 26/103 and embarked from New Zealand on the 5th of February 1916.

Herbert disembarked at Suez on the 15th of March 1916 and embarked to join the BEF in France on the 7th of April 1916. On the 9th of October 1916 Herbert transferred to the Lewis Gun Section of the 4th Battalion, 3rd New Zealand Rifles Brigade. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on the 12th of April 1917, Corporal on the 7th of June 1917 and Sergeant on the 12th of November 1917.

Herbert was awarded the Military Medal for “acts of gallantry in the field” on the 30th of April 1918. London Gazette – 16th of July 1918, page 8333. His citation states: "For bravery and good work during the operations near Colincamps on 28, 29, 30 and 31st March 1918. During an attack on a strongly held enemy post his platoon commander was killed, and Sergeant Hine at once took command, and pushing on with the utmost dash, captured the post and consolidated it with skill.  Though his flank was exposed he held on for some 12 hours till the situation was cleared up by a further attack".

Herbert survived the war and discharged in New Zealand on the 8th of May 1919. In 1938 Herbert is pictured in the NZ Police Gazette, Wellington Prisoners’ Photographs. He volunteered again, on the 14th of May 1940, for WW2 service and was discharged on the 26th of April 1943. For his service in both WW1 and WW2 Herbert is entitled to the MM, BWM & Victory Medals, 1939-45 War and NZ Service Medals.
