Alfred Holland was born on the 17th of October 1868 in Goulburn, New South Wales. He was working as a Building Contractor when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 16th of March 1916. Upon enlistment Alfred stated that he had previous military service with the NSW Lancers during the Boer War. (Alfred did enlist and serve with the NSW Lancers during the Boer War, under his step-fathers surname “Borman.” 887 Trooper Alfred Theodore Borman.)

 

After enlisting in the A.I.F Alfred was allocated service number 724 and embarked from Melbourne on the 8th of May 1916 with the 3rd Mobile Veterinary Section. After time in Egypt Alfred disembarked in England on the 9th of August 1916. On the 12th of August 1916 he was taken on strength with the 3rd Mobile Veterinary Section.

 

On the 20th of November 1917 Alfred transferred to the Australian Veterinary Hospital and on the 23rd of December 1917 was attached to the 7th Field Artillery Brigade. On the 6th of April 1918 he marched out to the Reserve Brigade Australian Artillery at Heytesbury. On the 18th of September 1918 Alfred was discharged from the A.I.F in the U.K and was employed as an Australian Munitions Worker. He eventually returned to Australia and died in Sydney on the 6th of July 1953.

 

For his service with the NSW Lancers during the Boer War Alfred was awarded the Queen’s South Africa Medal – Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesberg, Diamond Hill, Belfast and Releif of Kimberley. For his service during WW1, he was awarded the British War and Victory Medals.
