John Lear was born about 1872 in Lisburn, Ireland. He emigrated to Australia and was working as a Labourer in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 17th of February 1916. He was allocated service number 4379 and embarked from Fremantle on the 1st of June 1916 with the 6th Tunnelling Company. At the time of enlistment, he was 44 years of age.
John disembarked at Plymouth on the 18th of July 1916 and proceeded overseas to France on the 28th of August 1916. On the 3rd of December he was taken on strength with the 3rd Tunnelling Company. On the same day he was charged for using “foul and obscene language to an N.C.O. He was sentenced to 28 days field punishment.
On the 2th of June 1917 John was charged with disobeying billet orders and again on the 8th of August 1917 for gambling in the billet. On the 3rd of October 1917 he was admitted to hospital (dental issues) and rejoined his unit on the 11th of November 1917.
John survived the war and returned to Australia on the 31st of March 1919, died on the 10th of June 1945.
