Record of Service: (GEORGE)
George Hurley was born about 1893 in Tempe, New South Wales. He was working as a Fireman with the NSW Railways when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 10th of August 1915. He was allocated service number 3127 and embarked from Sydney on the 20th of December 1915 with the 7th Reinforcements, 20th Battalion.
George was taken on strength with the 56th Battalion on the 16th of February 1916 and proceeded to join the B.E.F on the 19th of June 1916. He disembarked at Marseilles on the 29th of June 1916 and after attending the Allied review in Paris, on the 14th of July 1916 was on strength with the Battalion on the 19th of July 1916. (Just in time for the Battle of Fromelles)
Just two days later, on the 21st of July 1916, George was Wounded in Action (GSW Head). The Battalion War Diary states at 6 a.m on the 21st “2nd Lieut. F. H. Day and 4 men in the Bn., were wounded, whilst out in “No man’s land” assisting the wounded.”
Sadly, George died of his wounds on the 16th of October 1916 at Norfolk War Hospital and now rests in the Norwich Cemetery, England.

Record of Service: (WILLIAM)
William Hurley was born about 1897 in Sydney, New South Wales. He was working as a Labourer when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 30th of October 1916 (Just two weeks after his brother DOW). He was allocated service number 6320 and embarked from Sydney on the 11th of November 1916 with the 18th Reinforcements, 18th Battalion.
William disembarked at Devonport on the 30th of January 1917 and proceeded to join the B.E.F on the 16th of July 1916. He was taken on strength with the 18th Battalion on the 1st of August 1917 and promoted to Lance Corporal on the 10th of August 1918.
William was Wounded in Action (multiple shell wounds thighs and face) on the 31st of August 1918 during the Battle of Mont St. Quentin. Sadley, he died of these wounds the next day on the 1st of September 1918. He now rests in the Suzanne Communal Cemetery, France.
