Leslie Weinert was born about 1894 in Kew, Victoria. His grandparents were German Lutheran emigrants who arrived in Port Adelaide in 1841.Leslie enlisted in the A.I.F on the 1st of March 1916 and was allocated service number 6102. He embarked from Melbourne on the 28th of July 1916 with the 19th Reinforcements, 5th Battalion.
Leslie disembarked at Plymouth on the 11th of September 1916 and proceeded overseas to France on the 2nd of November 1916. On the 17th of November 1917 he was taken on strength with the 5 th Battalion. On the 16th of December 1916 Leslie was admitted to hospital suffering from trench feet.
Leslie spent the majority of 1917 in and out of hospital and convalescent depots before returning to Australia, for a change, on the 31st of January 1918. On his return leg to Australia Leslie’s boat stopped at Cape Town for supplies. Leslie went ashore and unfortunately for him he failed to return in time for the boat’s departure. He was charged and awarded 168 hours detention and lost 28 days pay.
Leslie was discharged on the 28th of September 1918 and he died in Victoria on the 21st of December 1965.
