    Samuel Emmett was born on the 20th of April 1884 in Hounslow, England. He was working as a Civil Engineer in Brisbane when he enlisted in the A.I.F on the 31st of May 1918. He was allocated service number 3086 and embarked with the May 1918 Railway Reinforcements from Sydney on the 17th of July 1918.

     

    On the 9th of August 1918 Samuel was promoted to A-Corporal (whilst on route to the U.K) and he disembarked at London on the 27th of September 1918. Following a stint in hospital (flu) he went AWL on the 28th of November 1918 until he was arrested on the 2nd of December 1918. On the 31st of December 1918 he was charged with being AWL and received 7 days field punishment. Samuel served at the Australian Railway Operating Depot until April 1919 and returned to Australia on the 23rd of July 1919.

     

    Samuel died in 1979. Interestingly he was mentioned in the, “Journal of the History of Collections vol. 36” where a study was done on service personnel who had collected souvenirs from countries in which they had served during WW1. Samuel had collected several artifacts that he donated to the Queensland Museum in 1972.
