Mr Loats lived in Hamilton, Victoria. He received the rank of Honorary Lieutenant and served with the Y.M.C.A in Cape Town, South Africa during WW1.
Mr. J. W. Loats was Honorary Secretary of the Hamilton Tennis Club (Victoria) in 1918. He is mentioned in the Hamilton Spectator (newspaper) on the 20th of April 1918 as having “passed his military service training examinations most satisfactorily and has a provisional appointment in field work for Cape Town.”
On the 25th of April 1918 Mr Loats is again mentioned in the Hamilton Spectator as being “home on final leave, prior to sailing under the banner of the Y.M.C.A for service abroad.”
Mr Loats farewell for South Africa was mentioned in the Hamilton Spectator on the 6th of June 1918 where farewells were given “Mr. Loats was one of the best men he had ever met…..he had always desired to serve his country, and now he was going to do his duty in ministering to the fighting men.”
