William Roff was born on the 20th of July 1891 in Sydney, New South Wales. He was working as a Chemist when he enlisted in the A.I.F, alongside his brother, on the 30th of April 1915. He was allocated service number 4456 and embarked from Sydney with the 3rd Australian General Hospital (A.G.H) on the 15th of May 1915.
The 3rd A.G.H arrived in England on the 27th of June 1915 and in August were deployed to Lemnos, in support of the Gallipoli campaign. William proceeded to join the M.E.F at Gallipoli on the 16th of August 1915. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on the 1st of September 1915 and then to Staff Sergeant on the 1st of November 1915.
On the 27th of January 1916 William departed Mudros for Abbassia, in Egypt, where the 3rd A.G.H were re-established. On the 31st of August 1916 he was struck off strength to undertake transport duties and embarked for Australia on the 2nd of September 1916. He returned to England on the 27th of March 1917 and on the 30th of March 1917 was detached for duty with Admin HQ in England. He was promoted to Honorary Lieutenant on the 1st of December 1917.
William returned to Australia on the 15th of November 1919 and his appointment was terminated on the 27th of February 1920. Post was he continued to work as a Chemist and he died on the 11th of May 1964.
